Best Dramas on Netflix for 2019
There are so many great shows on Netflix that it almost feels impossible to try and find something new to watch – just how are you supposed to choose? Luckily, we’ve got some good suggestions.
Netflix, the iconic streaming service that introduced us all to the concept of binge watching TV, taught us that it is okay to spend our whole weekend hiding inside while working your way through all eight seasons of a show.
We have all become so dependent on Netflix these days that it can be a rather daunting task to pick a new drama. I know that when I’ve come to the end of a series that I’ve invested weeks into, with characters that I’ve gotten to know better than my own family, I am suddenly faced with the prospect of picking a new world that I will invest an unhealthy number of hours into.
But where do I start? I have come up with a list of my most anticipated Netflix dramas of 2019, so as to make the task a little easier and help you find your new addiction for the next few weeks.
Below is a list of my top 5 binge worthy dramas that are available on Netflix:
Orange is the New Black
Orange is the New Black is one of the original binge watching shows that Netflix released back in 2013, introducing us to a whole new way of watching TV. Following main character Piper Chapman, a typical mid-30s girl from Connecticut whose past life as a drug runner has finally caught up with her, resulting in being sentenced to a minimum-security prison, forced to trade in her glamorous lifestyle for an orange jumpsuit. The show has come a long way since then, introducing characters from all walks of life and dealing with the daily dramas of prison life. There was also the riot that took over a whole season and saw a huge shake up of the show, moving to a maximum security prison, saying goodbye to a number of loved characters and welcoming some tougher faces. Orange is the New Black is one of those shows that you become so invested in that it leaves a hole in your life, which remains empty for 10 months of the year while you wait with much anticipation for the next season. The good news is that we can expect another drama filled season to be released at some point between early June and late July.
Russian Doll
Russian Doll feels more like an extended film than an actual series, with there only being eight episodes, each just under half an hour in length. This is definitely a show that is worth dedicating a few hours to and watching the whole series in one go, in order to truly appreciate the weirdness that is Russian Doll. The show follows Nadia played by Natasha Lyonne who is stuck in a perpetual loop where she keeps dying, only to find herself back at the same party completely unharmed. Caught in a Ground Hog Day situation, Nadia tries everything to stop herself from dying, unable to accept her fate. As her world begins to unravel around her, literally, she meets a stranger who is also caught in the same loop as her. Working together they try to understand exactly what is happening to them, Russian Doll is a show that will mess with your mind in a way that very few shows can, so sit back and enjoy the disturbing and griping adventure.
Peaky Blinders
Peaky Blinder is set in 1919’s Birmingham and follows Thomas Shelby a solider returning from the Great War and battling PTSD as a result of his war time experiences. In order to cope he turns to a life of organized crime, becoming the leader of a local gang. Driven by ambition and a desire to block out the war, he works to take his gang to the next level, with a mob that covers the entire country. I was pleasantly surprised by this show and just how many layers it has to it, covering everything from severe PTSD to murder. There are currently 4 seasons to binge watch your way through, with another season set to be aired later this year.
The OA
The OA is a mystery drama that will keep you guessing. Seven years after Prairie Johnson vanished she suddenly returns and no one knows where she’s been and no one is able to answer why she is no longer blind. Prairie refuses to discuss what happened to her over the seven years that she was missing, leaving the FBI and her family very much in the dark. That is not the only thing that she is hiding, as she has developed a mysterious new ability, an ability that she must use to complete a secret mission. There are currently only two seasons available on Netflix but five total seasons have been promised, making this a show that you can invest in for a few years to come.
Jessica Jones
Jessica Jones is one of Marvel’s darker and disturbed characters, and is based on Marvel’s Comic character of the same name. Following Jessica, as her life as a superhero begins to crumble around her, she decides to settle in New York and do what all failed superheroes do, open her own detective agency. Focusing on clients who have strange and mysterious abilities she becomes involved in some less than ideal situations, for a character who is battling her own demons. While an exact date has not been set, it has been confirmed that we can expect season 3 to be released at some point in 2019.
So are you a Drama fan? Have you watched on of the above-mentioned shows already? Let us know in the comments your favorite Netflix dramas. In the meantime if you are interested in Netflix hottest releases for 2019, check this out.
