Netflix hottest releases for 2019
Best movies and TV shows coming to Netflix on 2019. Stay tunned and scroll down.
This year Netflix has once again become again a pioneer with its original film “Roma” winning 3 Oscars, by being the first movie produced by a home streaming platform, that made it to the most famous movie awards in the world. It’s going to be a big year for the company with a hot calendar of releases that includes eagerly awaited titles such as the fourth season of Rick and Morty, the third season of Stranger Things and a variety of new comedy specials. These are the ones that you can’t miss.
We had a sad announcement for Netflix’s subscribers this year. Disney is going to pull back all the distribution licenses for its products, including all Marvel and Star Wars movies and shows that will only be available through their own streaming service. Nevertheless, there are plenty of other hot shows and movies that will come to our screens this year:
MARCH:
Although we’re half way through March, there are still some big shows to hit our screens:
Triple Frontier – March 13
This is the new awesome movie by J.C. Chandor, that begun his career with Margin Call, a pretty small movie about the financial crisis of 2008. Triple Frontier is a beautifully shot action thriller starring five of the most valued actors today: Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garret Hedlund and Pedro Pascal. Drugs, money and politics make this drama a very fresh and realistic approach to the dilemmas and corruption of the special forces that fight drug lords in South America.
Arrested Development: Season 5B - March 15
This insane comedy starring Jason Bateman continues one more hilarious season. Seasons 1 and 2 were some of the best in the history of comedies and set a very high standard that was difficult to maintain for the following seasons. Nevertheless, even the bad episodes of Arrested Development are so much fun to watch, because the scripts are awesome and the casting is just perfect. If you don't know this show yet I'd recommend you to put it on your to-do list right away.
The OA season 2 - March 22
A very original premise to this well orchestrated thriller, that left us holding our breath at the end of season 1. One of the most creative plots we’ve seen so far on TV, and after watching the trailer I can tell they’re committing with the way they started. This is definitely one of my top 10 shows on Netflix.
Patriot Act with Hassan Minaj – every Sunday
The controversy around American and international politics continues giving life to comedy/politics shows that, like this one, intend to make us aware of the main threats to our civil rights. If you’re into politics, this is a show for you, because not very often a Muslim comedian is the person that delivers the news. Hassan takes advantage of his Pakistani origins and presents very interesting research that affect not only North America, but the entire planet, in a way that we can relate to. I've watched all the episodes and I just can't wait to have more available.
APRIL:
Our Planet - April 5
This eight part documentary from the creators of Planet Earth continues to explore the wonders of our world, delighting our eyes with its astonishing beauty. Netflix opened the screening license of this title for educational purposes, and we have to appreciate that, because the world needs us to be fully aware of the global problems we’ll be facing soon. We tend to be so focused on our daily routines that it's very liberating to get a broader view of the world to become aware of our position and our responsibility to it.
Kevin Hart: Irresponsible – April 2
Kevin Hart brings his sold-out comedy tour, Kevin Hart: Irresponsible, to a global audience for his first original Netflix stand-up special. He is one of the best paid comedians in the world for a reason, he never disappoints. It's one of my favourite comedians because he has the same energy and humor that Eddy Murphy had on his early stand-up shows, we will have to wait until April the 2nd but I think there's little room for error when I say it's going to be hilarious!
JULY:
Stranger Things, season 3 - July 4
Possibly one of the biggest international hits for Netflix, the third season of this 80’s style adventure show will continue with some of the plots that were unfinished previously, and there are rumors that this time there will be a Russian enemy involved. Save this Independence Day for the Stranger Things marathon because it’s about to get serious. After an amazing first season and a second one that felt a little diluted, the hype is over the roof because the monster is still inside the Upside Down and the Duffer Brothers, creators of the show, advanced that the action is going to expand outside Hawkins. That means it's going to be bigger? I can't wait!
DATE TO BE CONFIRMED:
Money Heist: Part 3 (La Casa Del Papel) – TBC
The biggest non-english speaking show on Netflix will come again this year with more adventures about the most spectacular bank heist that we’ve ever seen. This thriller changed the way we produce TV in Spain, and earned the crown for being one of the most entertaining shows of 2017, with an outstanding cast and a flawless epic narrative. Being Spanish myself, I have to admit that there's maybe too much influence of Hollywood in it, although this may be the key to its success. It's super fun to watch, but be warned: it isn't very authentic regarding the Spanish culture.
Rick and Morty season 4- TBC
Definitely one of the best shows on tv and my second favorite animation show of all time, right below Futurama. The new creation of Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland has already a massive community of followers and devotees craving for the new season of this animated adult show that has brought a whole new meaning to science fiction. If you followed Community, the previous creation of Dan Harmon, you'll see that Rick and Morty is bigger, better and wilder.
Disenchantment Part 2 – TBC
After an erratic first season, Matt Groening’s new series is expected to fully unleash its potential in season 2. I'm pretty sure that it's going to be much better because Matt Groening is one of the best creative minds of our time and we saw that at the end of season one he left things ready to start the story he really wants to tell. It felt like an introduction to the universe and now it's about to get really interesting. I just can't wait because, you know, he's the man that created Futurama!
Mindhunter season 2 – TBC
The incredibly intense thriller from David Fincher will hit the screen again this year. This was one of the best surprises for me in 2018 for its daring approach to the science and study of serial killer’s psychology. Dense and stunning, this show has given us some incredible characters and a chilling exploration of human evil in first person. I think this is the show that David Fincher was born to film, it just has everything I love about Fincher: detectives, murderers, psychology, thrills and a story about partners. Totally recommended if you loved Seven, but have in mind that this one is denser.
Black Mirror season 5 – TBC
This is without doubt one of the best series ever created. If you enjoy dystopian futures and technological cautionary tales this one is going to make you very happy. This year, Netflix released Bandersnatch, an interactive experience based on the Black Mirror universe that turned out to be a big success and served as a hype booster for the new season that’s going to be epic. I felt it was a little disappointing, because it was very much focused on giving the audience control, interaction, but the script wasn't great, and the interactive experience is not really what I personally want when I watch TV. Luckily they are making season 5 how I like it, plain traditional old-fashioned episodes.
There are plenty of other eagerly anticipated shows that are confirmed but don’t have an official release date yet. Here are some of the ones you can’t miss:
Still Laugh-in: the stars celebrate. TBA
The Alienist season 2 - TBC
Orange Is The New Black season 7 – TBC
Sacred Games season 2 – TBC
Anne with an E: Season 3 – TBC
Final Space season 2 - TBC
Insatiable season 2 – TBC
Better Call Saul season 5 – TBC
Power season 6 – TBC
Ozark season 3 - TBC
BoJack Horseman: Season 6 – TBC
Suits season 9 - TBC
Élite season 2 - TBC
Narcos Mexico season 2 – TBC

I was born in Madrid, studied Media and then decided to travel as much as I could. I love audiovisuals, technology, travelling and yes, politics too. I play drums because they are the best instrument and the only one that you can practice anywhere. My home is the World and my dream is to never stop dreaming!
