Best Comedies on Netflix for 2019
Netflix is home to some of the very best TV shows and films on the internet at the moment; however, which comedies are actually worth watching? Find out the very best ones here.
Netflix is the home of binge watchable dramas and gripping movies, which leave you wondering why you would ever want to pay for a cinema ticket again just for a few hours of entertainment, but there are some days when you just need a good old, easy going comedy to zone out to and have a good laugh. After a long day at work or a family lunch that I reluctantly dragged myself to, I just need to grab a beer and some chips and unwind with a quality, iconic comedy show.
While I tend to binge watch one Netflix drama at a time, I like to have a number of different comedies on the go at once, meaning that I always have a show to turn to that suits my current mood. There are those days when you just need a hilarious cartoon that you could laugh to for hours on end and then there are days when you want a continuous story that you become invested in with a comedic twist.
I have put together a list of my current favorite Netflix comedies that have filled my life with hours of laughter, always managing to put a smile on my face.
Below are my top 5 must-watch comedies on Netflix:

After Life is the perfect mix of comedy and emotion, focusing on Tony, played by Ricky Gervais. Tony has just lost his wife to cancer and no longer sees the point in anything, especially maintaining his reputation as a nice guy. No longer caring about what people think of him, Tony does not hold back on being honest to everyone that he meets, leading to some excellently humorous scenes. His carefree attitude also means that he no longer fears standing up for himself, challenging two young thieves and preventing women from being mugged. Tony has a level of bravery that all iconic men wish that they possessed deep down. There is however a darker side to the show, with Tony attempting to kill himself on a number of occasions before being stopped by his incredibly loyal dog, who reminds him that he still has a purpose in life.
One minute I was laughing as Ricky Gervais’s witty humor and the next I was struggling to prevent tears from filling my eyes, as his dog once again saves his life. If you’re in the mood for a roller coaster of a show, which still somehow manages to be light-hearted and easy to binge watch I cannot recommend After Life enough.

A much more lighthearted comedy, Big Mouth is an animated series about Andrew, a teenager trying to make it through puberty in one piece. I was put off by the premise of this show at first, thinking that it was a teenage show which as an adult I would not enjoy, however, I later found out that it is in fact targeted at adults who can appreciate the funny side of teenage life, having made it through to the other side.
Big Mouth tackles all of the big issues that we, unfortunately, remember from our teenage years, including awkward romances and learning to understand our changing bodies. What makes this show so great is that it approaches these topics in a very matter of fact way, with a comedic spin. The show is aware that it is being watched by adults, with a humor style that relies on being able to look back at issues that consumed us as teenagers but with hindsight barely even seem like problems. I have spent many hours after a stressful day at work, laughing endlessly to this show and reminiscing about the good old days when life was so much easier and I just didn’t realize it.

F is for Family is set in the 1970’s and focuses on Frank Murphy and his mundane suburban life. With a dysfunctional family that have very little respect for him and a dead end job at the local airport, Frank has very little to smile about. In order to cope with his day to day rut, Frank has a habit of breaking out into passion filled and sometimes rude rants about his life and the world around him. Despite there being a level of seriousness to Frank’s outbursts he manages to express himself in a comedic fashion and with such vulgar honesty, it is hard not to laugh as we watch this poor man delve one step closer to madness.
The shows transports us back to 1970’s suburban life and reminds us of the excellent music and worrying fashion sense that once existed. The family dynamics within the show remind us of what life was like when families had to actually communicate with each other, deprived of the modern joys of group messaging.
If you’re a fan of shows like Family Guy and American Dad, as I am, you are sure to enjoy F is Family.

I was intrigued by the premise of The Good Place back in 2016 when the first season aired and have been addicted to this show since. Main character Eleanor dies in a tragic shopping cart accident, only to wake up and find herself in the Good Place, despite not having led the most moral, good life back on earth. Eleanor quickly works out that she does not belong and due to an admin error, it’s good to know that even after death there is no escaping such hell, her file was confused with another Eleanor. In an attempt to not be found out she seeks the help of sickeningly moral Chidi to teach her how to be a good person.
I don’t want to ruin the entire plot of the show, so I am just going to say that nothing in the Good Place is quite what it seems and there are a number of surprises in store for each resident. The latest season is due to air later this year, so you have a few months to catch up Eleanor’s adventures in the afterlife, ready for all of the twists and turns that are sure to come with the next season.

A big fan of shows such as Friends and How I Met Your Mother, there has been a hole in my life for the last few years that I have been unable to fill with a New York based group of friends but that all changed when I discovered Friends from College. Following a group of friends, who met during their time at Harvard, as they welcome in their 40’s. Still dealing with all of the struggles that we hope will be long behind us by the time that we reach our 40’s, this group of friends seem to stumble from one comedic disaster to another. Grab a beer and sit back and enjoy their romantic dramas, workplace nightmares and friendship battles, knowing that life apparently doesn’t get easier as you get old.
