Yasiel Puig ejected just moments after trade. "The wild horse" is packing up for Cleveland
Yasiel Puig, Trevor Bauer, and hot prospect Taylor Trammell were the stars of the latest MLB three-team trade.
The move has not yet been made official but insiders say that The Reds would receive Bauer from the Indians, the Indians would get Puig from the Reds while outfielder Taylor Trammell would go to the Padres in exchange for Franmil Reyes and pitcher Logan Allen from the Padres.
And with so little time before the trade deadline, the teams are apparently reviewing medicals.
Incidentally, the news of this startling deal found Yasiel Puig involved in a brawl. The short stay at Cincinnati came to a fiery end for the intense right fielder who managed to prologue an extensive brawl that started in the top of the ninth, in a game that the Reds lost against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.
Tension began to build up in the seventh, when Pittsbourg’s Keone Kela threw a ball up and into Dereck Detrich. The two already had some history and still remembered the fight that took place at the PCN Park after Dietrich admired one of his homers.
Then, Reds manager David Bell was ejected for arguing a strike call with Puig at bat. And they did not stop there as Cincinatti’s Jared Hughes was tossed for hitting Starling Marte with his first pitch in the ninth.
Amir Garrett came on to pitch for the Reds, exchanged words with the Pirates, then ran toward the dugout to throw the punches that started the brawl. The rest of the Cincinnati roster joined in and it took a while for things to get back under control. The Puig intervention actually prolonged the whole affair and he was subsequently ejected along with Bell, Garrett, Hughes and bench coach Freddie Benavides. Yasiel almost reignited the entire fight and there seems to be no limit to his anger.
It is the second time Puig finds himself in a Reds vs. Pirates altercation. But he may escape serious consequences unlike his soon to be former teammate, Bell, who joined the fray although he was ejected earlier in the game.
Yasiel "The Wild Horse" Puig came to the Reds from the Dodgers in a move that involved Matt Kemp, Alex Wood, Kyle Farmer as well as cash considerations in exchange for Homer Bailey, Jeter Downs, and Josiah Gray. His 2018 les than spectacular season was followed by this short stay in Cincinnati.
The former Cuban national team player could find a second wind with the Indians and bring back some of his early days, record-breaking performances. Let’s not forget he was the first player in major league history to record at least 34 hits and seven home runs in his first 20 games and set Dodger records for most hits through 20 games and total bases through 20 games.
Not to say that his current form won’t be a boost to the Indians. Yasiel is batting .252 with 22 homers and 61 RBIs. The new additions to Cleveland, Puig, and Reyes have combined for 49 home runs. All Indian corner outfielders have a total of 28 this season.
"This part of the year is amazing for me, being on this team and the city," Puig said after the Reds lost. "Now it's time to move forward and go to my new team and help my team go to the playoffs. ... I want to say thank you to all the city, Cincinnati. We stay next door — we're going to Cleveland."
