Yankees triumph 14-12 over Twins after the insane catch by Aaron Hicks
The Yankees vs Twins match last night developed into quite an epic affair for an ordinary and regular-season encounter. A game that some, are already calling the most spectacular of the year and one that had fans holding their breath. After five hours of play, it all came to an end when, Aaron Hicks made his superhero game-winning catch, bringing the Yankees back from a 6-run deficit. Didi Gregorious kept the Yankees in the game for much of the night. And it was not an easy task, as it was a great game for both sides.
Sir Didi managed 7 RBIs, bringing the quality and consistency his team needed to survive this cliffhanger of a game.
After this win, the Yankees now have a 10-game lead over the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, while the Twins are down to only a three-game lead over Cleveland Indians in the AL Central.
Following five lead changes or ties in the final three innings, Hicks sealed the win with his clutch grab.
In true superhero style, Hicks commented on this impressive catch, "I was running hard...I wanted to make sure I made the catch, and I was able to". And yes he did make that catch look effortless, prompting Minnesota’s outfielder Max Kepler to reply, "You do everything right, but it gets caught".
The Yankee's center fielder has been with the team since 2016 and ended last year’s season with 27 home runs, 79 RBIs, and 119 hits. The season highlights were the 3 home runs in one game against the Boston Red Sox.
Making a tremendous winning catch in this, nerve wreaking, slugfest should be satisfying enough for any ballplayer, but Hicks has even more reasons to celebrate. The Minnesota Twins is the team that drafted him and then traded him to the Yankees, 2 years later, for J.R. Murphy. At the time some fans, as well as the Twins organization, felt that Murphy could make a better addition to their roster. It turned out they were wrong, as Murphy never made the cut and was not kept for long.
Earlier this year, Aaron Hicks signed a contract for a 7 year, $ 70 million expansion on his one year contract with the Yankees, with a $ 12.5 million club option for 2026.
Good positioning is very important to outfield players and ideally, a great outfielder never has to dive to make a catch. But there will always come a day when someone decides to go after that game-winning ball with all he’s got and seal the outcome of a match.
Time will tell if this shocker of a game will be the best of the year. But this catch by Hicks is here to remind us all why we love baseball in the first place.
