Airport Gym - an emerging trend
Remember all those times when you've been sprinting from one terminal to another, gasping for breath and trying desperately to make the flight? Well, there may be a solution to hand. Actual gyms in the airport are emerging in many states and many say this will be the next ultimate exercising trend?
In the the past couple of years, people are opting for a healthier lifestyle and focus more on their wellbeing. From avocado toasties to vitamin water to hitting the gym regularly, healthy living has become the absolute trend. We live in a hectic, overcrowded, polluted world and as human beings of 2019 we strive to diminish all the above at least on a personal level. Companies have taken notice of this and started offering healthy food options, spa and relaxation treatments, airport therapy dogs and now gyms in major airports. Because if you are a frequent flyer (like myself) you know the struggle of hitting the gym properly.
People can hang at an airport for hours or days even. Either because they are delayed, due to horrible unpredictable weather conditions or simply waiting for their connecting flight, the wait feels eternal. The uncomfy airport chairs and the overcrowded restaurant facilities, only contribute in building frustration. Some sought out peace and quietness, hence more airports started offering yoga sessions in 2017. From public sessions to private, this was huge step towards offering a fitness regime at the airports.

The main argument against this initiation is that people won’t pay monthly or yearly membership to work out on the odd occasion. I understand this viewpoint but first of all you can pay a day pass or for a couple of hours. Non-frequent flyers wouldn’t be interested in a lengthy plan but there are businessmen, airport staff and flight crew that spend a lot of their time in airports. For instance, Roam Fitness aims to expand their services to many national airports. With their membership, one can hit the gym in various locations in the States and make the most out of your money.
Obviously, you’re thinking well what happens to my luggage, where do I leave my oversized luggage, do I have to unpack to get into my gym gear? All airport gyms offer either free or paid, the above-mentioned services. So literally you can walk into any of these gyms in your suit and put on your workout clothes, shoes, get towels and drinks, depending on location. Store luggage in the oversized cupboards and best of all hit the showers afterwards. Most of the airport gyms offer private showers and changing rooms. You can workout for however long your layover is, exhaust yourself, hit the showers and then board on your flight ready to sleep till landing.

Next time, you have a long delay and just wander around the airport like a zombie, checkout if there’s a gym. If the business you’re on, is suddenly prolonged and you have to stay longer at a random location get yourself an airport gym membership. If you are restless and face flight anxiety, hit the gym to exhaust yourself in order to not think about your pending flight. If you had way too much food and drinks on your holiday, hit the gym before arriving home. We all want to be fit and iconic so why not give this alternative option a go?
