Veganism: the food trend taking over the world
This food trend has been around for years but recently there 's been a huge increase of people religiously practising Veganism. There are various pros and cons given and even the occasional extremist view.
Have you ever wonder why there is such a huge increase of Vegans? We investigate this food trend by explaining exactly what it is, as well as the main pros and cons. And we will try to predict if this a current trend that will be obsolete in a few years or a sustainable one.
What is Veganism?
Veganism is the next step to Vegetarianism. Vegetarians don’t eat meat, fish or poultry. Vegans in addition to the above don’t consume any animal products or by-products such as: honey, eggs, dairy products, leather, cosmetics and soaps deriving from animal products.
Why go Vegan?
There are several reasons why people choose to become Vegans. The prime one is their empathy for the animals. Veganism has impact on the environment and your health. The ethical reasons behind this choice, make Vegans argumentative proclaimers of their lifestyle choice. They promote a more humane and caring way of living.

How can you switch to a Vegan Nutrition?
At first it is suggested you become a Vegetarian. Cutting all animal products at once is extremely difficult. You have to explore meat alternatives such as tofu, tempeh, seitan etc. Decide whether you can substitute the meat and fish in your diet with these sorts of products. Once, you make all the necessary adjustments and you feel you are ready, cut out all animal by-products. Replace milk with soya, coconut or almond milk. Remove eggs and honey from your diet and observe whether it is possible to live without them. Balance your nutrition by getting all the relevant nutrients with supplements.
The Vegan Manifesto:
This is not a manifesto, just some of the reasons people choose to go Vegan. One of their many arguments is that if you are an animal lover and have a pet, how can you eat another animal? Which it makes sense to be honest. It shows compassion to all animals and Vegans take stance against animal exploitation and cruelty. A Vegan diet requires only one third of the land needed to support a meat and dairy diet.
Being Vegan is a healthier dietary option since with a proper balanced diet you can get all the nutrients necessary. The environment is benefited by Vegans because animal production has a heavy impact on the planet. The water needed for the animals as well as the transportation of crops to feed them, are burdening the environment. Poor communities will prefer to grow crops for animal feed as they will get more money out of it, rather than food for themselves. Deforestation is a regular occurrence since larger spaces are needed, for the animals growing up destined for the slaughterhouse.
Against Vegan Ideology:
There are a few arguments against Veganism and most of them involve a level of disdain due to the shaming most Vegans practice on any meat eater. Protesters naked or dressed as animals only cause mockery and disapproval. Plus, I feel anyones lifestyle choice should be respected and food nowadays is a lifestyle choice.
Humanity has eliminated natural predators (such as wolves) if we don’t manage herbivore we would face ecological disasters which regulated hunting prevents. All farms (even the eco-friendly ones) use animal products and services therefore their plants are not entirely vegan. There isn’t an array of options when it comes to animal based clothing and most of the alternatives are harmful to the environment (most of them are made of plastic).
Health-wise, not every organism can adjust and strive with a Vegan diet. Vegans are required to take supplements in order to get all the nutrients needed. There are Vegans who can’t take specific supplements due to their blood type therefore they are lacking essential vitamins which can have multiple effects. Meat offers protein which not only needed but essential in order to build a healthy and fit body. In some cultures, meat eating is important and by cooking traditional food (with meat) they preserve and promote their culture. An added argument is that plants are living organisms and therefore Vegans still have to kill it to eat it. A balanced ecosystem must contain all species of animals and the circle of life must run naturally (meaning that they will need to die at some point).
The Gist:
We live in the free world and everybody should be allowed to have their own food preferences without limitations. That goes for both meat-eaters and Vegans. All restaurants and cafes should include Vegan options. On the other hand, meat-eaters shouldn’t be given the stinky eye every time they order meat. Food is one of the best things in life and shouldn’t cause an outrage especially considering how many millions around the world are starving.
As a food trend, I feel Vegans will continue to grow since awareness is constantly raised. An iconic man can be a Vegan or Vegetarian and he is man enough not to shame others. An iconic man can be a meat-eater who respects Vegans and doesn’t mock them. We live in 2019 just be respectful of others and practice what you believe in.
